Mystikal to rap in Honolulu on eve of his sentencing

By Derek Paiva

MYSTIKAL
Rap star Mystikal, who pleaded no-contest in June to extortion and guilty to sexual battery of the infirmed, will perform at a Honolulu nightclub show four days before sentencing on one of those charges.

The raspy-voiced rapper, best known for hits such as "Danger (Been So Long)" and "Shake Ya ...," has been booked for an event billed as Mystikal Halloween In Honolulu at Volcanoes Nightclub on Oct. 30.

Mystikal — whose real name is Michael Tyler — admitted forcing his hairstylist to perform sex acts on him and two of his bodyguards at his Baton Rouge, La., apartment in July 2002. Prosecutors said that the rapper believed the hairstylist was stealing from him and told her that he would not press charges if she performed the sex acts.

Tyler, 32, will be sentenced on the battery charge in Baton Rouge on Nov. 3. A sexual battery of the infirmed charge is applied when the victim is unable to resist because of an abnormal condition of mind, or stupor, from any cause, and the offender is aware of this incapacity. The conviction carries a maximum 10 year sentence.

Mystikal was sentenced to five years probation on the extortion charge in June.

Tyler, a Gulf War veteran, debuted as rapper Mystikal with 1995's "Mind of Mystikal" CD. His next three CDs entered the Billboard Top 200 album chart's top five, with 2000's "Let's Get Ready" debuting at No. 1. His most recent CD "Tarantula" garnered two 2002 Grammy Award nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Male Solo Performance."

Volcanoes Nightclub management was aware of Mystikal's legal travails but said they had received no complaints about the upcoming show.

Tickets for Mystikal's Honolulu show are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $30 for V.I.P. room seating. V.I.P. tickets includes a post-show opportunity to meet the rapper. Doors open at 9 p.m. For more information, call Volcanoes Nightclub at 528-7071.
