Battle Royale rocks with new CD

Local ska-punk band Battle Royale, above, has a new CD coming out, and they're throwing a party! Celebrate the release of "God, the Devil and the World" tonight at the X Factory, 3097 Kalihi St., where the party rages on from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Other bands joining the festivities include Linus, Push the Pedal and Middleton. A rocking October with Shellac

Celebrate Rocktoberfest this weekend with Chicago's Shellac, above, whose post-hardcore, noise-rock and indie-rock tunes are heard on the albums "At Action Park," "Terraform" and "1000 Hurts." Happy 40th birthday

The Polynesian Cultural Center ends a one-week celebration with a performance today by O'Brian Eselu and his halau and a Saturday parade in La'ie and concert by Pati — all to celebrate the center's 40th anniversary. The concerts are free and take place 6-7 p.m. at the front entrance plaza; the parade begins at 11:15 a.m. on Hale La'a Boulevard, featuring the Royal Hawaiian Band, the center's 30 millionth visitor, fancy cars, the PCC Brass Band, the Kahuku ROTC and others.


For the love of storytelling

Celebrate storytelling and oral history at the annual Talk Story Festival this weekend. Big Island storytellers Jack Boyle and Sandra MacLees, along with Titta of Mana'o Radio from Maui, will journey over to McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Park for the fun. This year's Mainland guest is children's book author Margaret Read MacDonald. O'ahu storytellers include Ed Chevy, Alton Chung, Gordon Freitas, Dan Furst, Dark, Brenda Freitas-Obregon, Achilles Gacis, Dan Kelin, Neil Milner, Dan Seki, Nyla Fujii-Babb, Lopaka Kapanui, Kealoha, James McCarthy and Makia Malo. Jeff Gere hosts.

Tonight, the theme is "Spooky Stories." Saturday night offers "New Voices" from new tellers young and old. Sunday focuses on "Tales of Aloha: Peace, Tolerance and Inspiration." Each session goes from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The festival includes storytelling workshops 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's focus will be "Story-ology: The Science of Story Trading," while Sunday has MacDonald teaching "Playing with Story."

Harmony, melody and Harmonia

Take a musical tour with Harmonia, an ensemble that performs folk music from the Danube to the Carpathian mountains, while showcasing the cultures of the region, such as Hungarian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Romanian, Croatian and Gypsy.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Orvis Auditorium. Tickets are $20 general and $15 for students, military, seniors, and UH faculty and staff. 956-6878.


'Spiritually Incorrect'

Alan Clements returns to Hawai'i for three shows on three islands for "Spiritually Incorrect," an improvisational spoken-word event that blends humor, drama, satire, art and activism.

Tickets are $20. The shows are a benefit for Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who is under house arrest in Myanmar.


A benefit for Kaiser drama program

Music and food are on the menu at Saturday's Outback Sunset Dinner and Concert on the Lawn, a fund-raiser for the Kaiser High School drama program.

Entertainment includes performances by Natural Vibrations, above, Ho'onu'a, Kale Imua, Wayne Borje and Round and Round. It all takes place 5-9 p.m. at the school's stadium. Pre-sale tickets are $20 general, $10 for children 10 and younger. At the door, tickets are $25 and $15. 258-0527.


Genoa Keawe launches Hana Hou! series

The Hawai'i Theatre's Hana Hou! Hawaiian music series kicks off at 8 p.m. today with the legendary Auntie Genoa Keawe. Her sweet falsetto voice is always celebrated, never imitated, throughout the state.

Also appearing tonight will be Kealoha Kalama and Halau Hula O Pohai Kealoha, George Holokai, Ihilani Miller, The B Sisters, Mapu Yasue, Flo Koanui and the Alama Sisters. Tickets are $30. 528-0506.


Lou Rawls in benefit concert

Let Lou Rawls' velvety smooth voice carry you away at a Wednesday concert that benefits the Hawaii International Film Festival. The Grammy-winner is known for such hits as "Lady Love," "You'll Never Find" and "Natural Man."
