UH in pregame rah-rah mood

Advertiser Staff

A pep rally, band concert, tailgate party and campus tours for alumni will highlight this weekend's expansive homecoming celebrations for tomorrow night's football game between the University of Hawai'i Warriors and the Texas-El Paso Miners.

The festivities are some of the most ambitious in recent years, with the student government, the UH Foundation, the chancellor's office and the housing office joining forces to offer two days of events surrounding the game.

Today a pep rally and free concert with bands Ho'onua and Natural Vibrations start at 5:30 p.m. on the Bachman Hall lawn, highlighted by the appearances of UH football coach June Jones and Warrior players, the UH band, cheerleaders and Rainbow dancers, and a giveaway of tickets to the game for the first 500 students with a valid UH ID. The event is sponsored by the student government.

Food will be for sale and prizes will be given away, with the rally wrapping up at 10 p.m.

Also today, UH alumni are invited back to campus for free trolley tours to reacquaint them with old haunts and new additions. Trolleys will leave the Legacy Path entryway on Dole Street periodically between 2 and 3:40 p.m.

Tomorrow's tailgate party at Aloha Stadium will begin at 4 p.m. with tents, tables, food and an entertainment stage set up in the NW Bullpen area below Gate 5. UH Foundation Alumni Relations is hosting the tailgate party. The featured band, Backyard Pa'ina, is sponsored by the UH Federal Credit Union.

Chartered buses will leave from UH dorms to the stadium; students can sign up for a ride.
