Even without All-American Lily Kahumoku, second-ranked Hawai'i had little problem with two-time defending East champion Rice last night. The Rainbow Wahine (21-1) swept the Owls, 30-19, 30-25, 30-22, to run their winning streak to 20.

Hawai'i has also won its past 82 against Western Athletic Conference volleyball opponents. It plays a non-conference match tonight at LSU, then goes to Tulsa tomorrow.

The Rainbow Wahine ran their WAC record to 8-0 last night in Houston, and ended the Owls' (13-9, 4-4 WAC) 15-match winning streak at Autry Court. They did it with a lot of Kim Willoughby (19 kills), a little balance and very little Rebeca Pazo.

The Owls' all-conference hitter from Venezuela had but three kills in the first two games. Pazo, ranked eighth nationally in kills, finished with a dozen, but hit just .194.

"We dug Pazo and took her out of her game," UH coach Dave Shoji said. "We did a good job defensively on her and pretty much that was it. She's averaging close to six kills a game so if she's not on, then they're not in the game."

UH pulled away early in the first game, with Lauren Duggins getting a kill to make it 8-6, then serving three in a row. Willoughby had seven kills in the game, with Nohea Tano adding five, Duggins and Maja Gustin four each and Susie Boogaard three.

"The middles were pretty much isolated 1-on-1 and they just went over that," Shoji said. "We passed well early so we got the ball to them a lot, and Tano put down everything we set her too."

Boogaard started for Kahumoku in the first game and freshman Alicia Arnott took over in the the second. Both played Game 3. Arnott finished with 10 kills and Boogaard five. Kahumoku missed the trip to concentrate on classes and rest her sore back.

Game 2 was tied at 22 before Willoughby lifted the 'Bows to an 8-3 closing surge. Pazo had just one kill in that game. The Owls took their only lead of the night early in Game 3, but Hawai'i's 16-5 run made it 20-10. Pazo helped Rice make it look respectable with five kills after that point.

QUICK SETS: Rice has two Hawai'i freshmen on the roster — Marissa Chow out of Punahou and Mililani's Amber Wiedemann, who played the final few points last night. ... In Dave Shoji's 28 years as Rainbow Wahine coach, his teams have won at least 20 matches 25 times. The exceptions were 1976, when UH only played 19 matches, and 1992 (15-12) and '93 (19-11). ... A few members of the Owls' NCAA championship baseball team upset a few Rainbow Wahine with their "ragging" early. Kim Willoughby talked with the referees about it after the first point and Shoji talked with the baseball players before the second game, coming away with a smile. "I was trying to get their numbers," Shoji said. "I told them I would be behind their dugout in Hawai'i. They liked that." ... Shoji said the team will not have its usual pre-match practice today and tomorrow to conserve energy.
