Billings, Lagat, Leilehua, Kapolei win in air riflery

Kalimari Billings won the girls' title and Ben-Kris Lagat the boys' giving Pearl City a sweep of the individual titles at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Air Riflery Championships at Pearl City.

Billings edged Shera Jules of Kapolei, 256-254. Lagat finished ahead of Kanoa Snowden of Kaimuki, 258-254.

Leilehua won the boys team championship and Kapolei was girls champion.

GOLF

Stubblefield leaving UH: Marga Stubblefield, the head coach of the University of Hawai'i women's golf team the past six years, will resign at the end of the year, the school announced yesterday.

Stubblefield, in a UH press release, said she has decided to concentrate on teaching.

"I want to dedicate all my efforts to continue teaching lessons at Olomana Golf Links, where I have been since 1984," Stubblefield said.

UH athletic director Herman Frazier said he will find an interim coach for the remainder of the school year before looking for a permanent replacement.

SURFING

Slater moves to No. 1: Florida's Kelly Slater won the Billabong Pro Mundaka yesterday, and overtook Kaua'i's Andy Irons for the No. 1 spot on surfing's 2003 World Championship Tour.

Slater defeated Australia's Taj Burrow in the one-on-one final, 16.63-14.10.

Through nine of 12 contests on the 2003 tour, Slater has 7,428 points. Irons dropped to No. 2 with 7,248. Burrow is No. 3 with 7,020.

The next event, the Nova Schin Festival, is scheduled to begin Monday at Santa Catarina, Brazil.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Matsui best in class: Chani Matsui, 15, of Honolulu, lifted a total of 264 pounds to win the 105-pound weight class at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships at Caguas, Puerto Rico, on Thursday.

Matsui snatched 115 pounds and clean-and-jerked 149 pounds.
