HONOLULU

Water use up but below peak

Water consumption on O'ahu averaged 159.78 million gallons per day for the week ending Wednesday, the Honolulu Board of Water Supply reported. It was an increase of 3 percent over the previous week, but still below peak summer levels.

The latest average was also higher than water use in the same week last year — 145.92 million gallons per day.

The water board attributed the increase to less rain and the return of hot weather.

Watershed talk in Mo'ili'ili

The first in a series of public meetings on a study to improve the Ala Wai watershed will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room 207 of the Mo'ili'ili Community Center, 2535 S. King St.

NORTH SHORE

Library budget focus of forum

The Friends of The Waialua Library will hold a communitywide forum on "Improvement in the Libraries and Schools of Hawai'i" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Waialua Public Library.

The meeting is in response to concerns about the amount of money available to libraries and schools in the state.

Residents will be given an opportunity to present questions to state Sen. Robert Bunda, D-22nd (North Shore, Wahiawa), and Rep. Michael Magaoay, D-46th (Kahuku, North Shore, Schofield), regarding the legislators' views on how best to provide for the state's educational facilities.

Teamsters can replace lost ballots

Teamsters who have not received their ballots for the Hawaii Teamsters and Allied Workers Local 996 election of officers have been advised to call the League of Women voters.

Local 996 officials said they were concerned some members might have lost or inadvertently thrown away their ballots.

Arlene Ellis, League of Women Voters elections coordinator, said 33 percent of Local 996 members have voted.

"That is a very good response," she said. "Very, very good."

Union members who cannot find their ballot and need a new one must call the league before 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Completed ballots must be postmarked by Friday to be counted. Election results are to be announced next Sunday.

The League of Women Voters can be reached at 531-7448, 537-6267 or 941-3724.

Phony firm solicits UH sports ads

A fraudulent company is posing as a branch of the University of Hawai'i in an effort to bilk potential supporters of the school's basketball team out of thousands of dollars, police and university officials said.

Letters from the phony operation using the name University Sports Publications have been sent to vendors, soliciting advertisements for the team's official program, police said. University officials say they have nothing to do with the letter campaign.

"It was obvious that this solicitation had nothing to do with UH at all," said Carolyn Tanaka, a spokeswoman for the university.

The letter is signed by "John Chris," who is identified as an ad sales director for the basketball program. It offers to sell advertisements in the program for as much as $4,330 for a full page.

Police said phone solicitations also had been made.

Maui fire destroys home in Pukalani

Sixteen firefighters from the Maui County Fire Department responded to a blaze that destroyed a home at 34 Paha'a Place in Pukalani late Friday night.

No one was injured in the fire, which caused $100,000 damage to the one-story wood structure and a $35,000 loss to the contents.

An adult and a toddler who were in the home escaped without injury.

The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene at 9:56 p.m., six minutes after the alarm was received.
