UH-Hilo stuns HPU in PacWest volleyball

Tiffanie Ollison had 17 kills and Sara Pilgreen had 14 kills and seven aces to lead the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to an 18-30, 30-13, 30-24, 30-24 upset over No. 14 Hawai'i Pacific in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at UHH Gymnasium.

Hilo is 6-10 overall, 3-3 in the PacWest. Hawai'i Pacific is 15-3 and 6-1.

Flavia Brakling had 17 kills to lead the Sea Warriors.

Kahealani Silva led Hilo with 14 digs.

BYUH sweeps past Chaminade: Chun Yi Lin had 16 kills and Yu Chuan Weng 14 to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 30-20, 30-13, 30-26 PacWest victory over Chaminade at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie last night.

BYUH, ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II, is 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 8-9 and 3-3.

Lin broke the school record for single-match kill percentage with .789. She put down 16 of 19 kill attempts with just one error.

Valasi Sepulona led Chaminade with 12 kills.



CROSS COUNTRY

• HPU sweeps: Hawai'i Pacific, led by William Ngetich, swept the top four places to win the Hilo Invitational cross country meet at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo campus yesterday.

Ngetich finished the 8-kilometer course in 26 minutes, 23 seconds, followed by Mikkel Kleis in 26:37, Abdeslam Naji in 26:52 and Harald Buerkle in 26:56.

HPU scored a meet-low 16 points, followed by Brigham Young-Hawai'i with 49, Hawai'i-Hilo with 69 and Chaminade with 79.

Chelsea Smith of Brigham Young-Hawai'i won the women's 6-kilometer race in 17:33, followed by Janine Brown of HPU in 18:49 and Nina Christensen of HPU in 18:50.

HPU won with 32 points, followed by UH-Hilo (54), BYUH (56) and Chaminade (69).



AIR RIFLERY

Sin, Cuban win ILH: Deana Sin of Sacred Hearts Academy set an Interscholastic League of Honolulu record with 554 points in the girls varsity competition, and Blake Cuban of Saint Louis won the boys varsity title at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Air Riflery Championships at Saint Louis School yesterday.

Sin finished ahead of teammates Shannon Li (539) and Krystle Sze (530).

Cuban scored 532, followed by Michael Tanaka of Punahou (524) and Eric Okamoto of Saint Louis (523).
