Man critical after shooting

A man was in extremely critical condition last night after a shooting in a garage at a house in 'Aiea.

The man, who appears to be in his 50s, was shot, possibly from a passing vehicle, shortly after 9:30 p.m. as he sat in his garage near 99-140 Pamoho Place, authorities said.

Police continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting late last night.

EMS paramedics said they took the man to Kapi'olani Medical Center at Pali Momi in "extremely critical condition." He was expected to be transferred to The Queens Medical Center.

Cancer benefit raises $150,000

Some 5,400 people pounded the pavement yesterday to raise more than $150,000 for breast-cancer awareness.

Breast-cancer survivors made up about 350 of the participants in the 9th Annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure at Kapi'olani Park.

Honolulu was one of 112 cities across the country to participate in the national fund-raiser, which benefits the Komen foundation, a nationwide network of volunteers working to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease through research, education, screening and treatment.

Seventy-five percent of yesterday's proceeds will go to local projects and programs.

Anti-war rallies critical of Bush

More than 150 drum-pounding, chanting, sign-waving protesters marched through Honolulu Saturday, denouncing the war in Iraq and delivering a scathing critique of President Bush.

The gathering at Ala Moana Park — and smaller ones in Kahului on Maui and Hilo on the Big Island — were tiny compared with a massive protest near the Washington Monument, which attracted tens of thousands.

But demonstrators at the Honolulu rally — organized by anti-war group Not In Our Name — were no less passionate about the country's military presence in Iraq.
