Task force honors dentist

The Massachusetts branch of the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence is honoring Dr. Wynn Okuda of Kaimuki with the 2003 Reverend Chang Imm Tan "Outstanding Visionary" Award for Okuda's work with the Give Back A Smile program.

The program treats dental injuries of victims of domestic violence so they can have normal smiles, Okuda said.

In June, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry elected Okuda National Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Give Back A Smile Charitable Foundation. Okuda founded Give Back A Smile in 1997. Since then he has assembled more than 900 volunteer dentists nationwide to provide free cosmetic dental care.

Eye doctor travels to Peru

Kailua ophthalmologist and Surgical Eye Expeditions International affiliate Peter Roney and his 17-year old daughter Anne recently volunteered for a medical mission in Juliaca, Peru. During a six-day clinic at Hospital Carlos Monse Medrano, the expedition team performed 15 surgeries on children who had misalignment of optic muscles or nerves and 50 sight-restoring cataract surgeries on adults who otherwise could not afford surgery.

"What a tremendously rewarding adventure," Roney said. "Having my daughter join me, watching her work and learn about the great need there is in other parts of the world, was very special. Thanks to Castle Medical Center department of surgery for donating supplies and helping me get instruments organized before we left."
