BYUH sweeps past UH-Hilo in volleyball

Chun Yi Lin had 15 kills and Yu Chuan Weng added 14 to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 30-20, 30-23, 30-18 Pacific West Conference women's volleyball victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at UHH Gymnasium last night.

BYUH, ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, are 8-0 in the PacWest and 16-2 overall. UH-Hilo is 3-4 and 6-11.

Sara Pilgreen had 10 kills for Hawai'i-Hilo.

BYUH and Hilo meet again tonight in Hilo in a non-conference match.

Pilgreen honored: Hawai'i-Hilo's Sara Pilgreen earned Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honors for helping the Vulcans upset 14th-ranked Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday.

Pilgreen, a senior outside hitter from Springfield, Ore., had 14 kills and seven aces as UH-Hilo defeated HPU, 18-30, 30-13, 30-24, 30-24.

Pilgreen leads the PacWest with 4.69 kills per game.

GOLF

McGarry leads by three: Russ McGarry shot a 2-under-par 69 for a three-stroke lead after the first round of the 13th annual Oahu Country Club Senior Men's Invitational yesterday.

McGarry was the only golfer to break par in the senior division for 55- to 64-year-olds. His round included four birdies and two bogeys.

Defending champion Mervin Matsumoto and Bruce Smith III are tied for second at 72.

Wendell Kop shot an even-par 71 to lead the super senior division (65 and older). Jim Swoish is six shots back in second.

Today's final round begins at 7 a.m.

Lynch, Yokomoto lead: John Lynch of Aloha Academy and Beau Yokomoto of Pearl Country Club shot a 61 yesterday for the first-round lead at the Assistant's 4-Ball Championship at Honolulu Country Club.

Shane Abe and Jerry Mullen of Oahu Country Club were second at 65 and Scotty Kaneko and Kevin Tsutomi of Waikele were third at 67.

PRACTICAL SHOOTING

Maui's Aoki third in class: Barry Aoki, a sergeant with the Maui Police Department and a member of the Valley Isle Sports Shooters Club, placed third in his class (B) and 97th overall in the United States Practical Shooting Association Open National Championships at Bend, Ore.

Aoki used a Briley 38 Super open gun equipped with a C-More scope for the competition, which was held Sept. 18-21.

He received an invitation to compete in the national championships after placing in the top 17 percentile at the Rio Salado Desert Classic held in Mesa, Ariz., in November 2002.

Accuracy, power and speed are measured in practical shooting. Competitions can include multiple and moving targets, targets that react when hit, penalty-carrying targets or partially covered targets.

SOFTBALL

Five Rainbow Wahine named scholar-athletes: Five University of Hawai'i's softball players were honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as 2003 All-America Scholar-Athletes.

Noelle Izumi (4.00), Justina Kahaku (3.78), Tracy Uchima (3.78), Stacey Ritter (3.78) and Marie Jackson (3.68) were selected.

The Rainbow Wahine ended the 2002-03 academic year with a 3.210 team GPA, 35th out of 80 Division I softball programs, according to the NFCA.
