Library system gets surprise
The Hawai'i State Public Library System received a surprise donation from Borders Books, Music & Café and Waldenbooks.
The donation, through the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, took place Oct. 11, the 90th anniversary of the Hawai'i State Library.
Customers of the two bookstores presented donations to benefit Hawai'i's public libraries in a recent statewide gift-card campaign, which was supported by Gov. Linda Lingle. Money from the campaign will be used to buy books for the libraries.
"I would like to thank the public for their generosity and support of our public libraries," said Jo Ann Schindler, the state librarian. "We really appreciate their aloha for libraries."
St. Andrew's teachers aided
St. Andrew's Priory has received an $18,000 grant from the Robert E. Black Fund of the Hawai'i Community Foundation to support teachers in completing the National Association for the Education of Young Children accreditation process at its Queen Emma Preschool.
The grant will help provide staff development workshops and allow the hiring of special advisers to assist with the accreditation process.
"We are extremely grateful to the Robert E. Black Fund for this grant that will give expertise and support for our teachers as they complete the accreditation process. The grant provides the time and resources that are scarce during the workday and enables our teachers to fully utilize their knowledge and creativity in this process," said Caroline Ward Oda, head of St. Andrew's Priory, which operates Queen Emma Preschool.
