Amateurs, pros team up in Bridgestone tourney

The third annual Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship will be at Pearl Country Club Monday and Tuesday.

Format is two-man team with one professional and one amateur, who must play without handicap. The first round is a scramble format and the second best ball of two.

Professionals will be playing for $9,000 and amateurs $3,350 in merchandise certificates and prizes.

There are 36 teams entered. Norman-Ganin Asao, who won with pro Lance Suzuki last year, is playing with Phil Anamizu. Suzuki is playing with Nathan Suzuki. Kevin Carll, who won the inaugural event with Mike Withrow, is with Neal Takara. Other teams include Casey Nakama and sponsor Del-Marc Fujita, brothers Philip and Mark Chun, cousins Regan Lee and Brandan Kop, and Lance Taketa and Jonathan Ota.

The first round is at 9:41 a.m. and the final round at 6:46 a.m.


UH men, women to host tourneys

The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine will host tournaments next week.

The UH/Turtle Bay Intercollegiate is Monday and Tuesday at the Arnold Palmer Course. The 16-team field will play 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday, with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start each day.

UNLV won last year's tournament with an 857 total. Dustin White, of Washington State, was medalist. He closed with a 5-under-par 67 for a 212 total.

This year's field includes UH-Hilo, Osaka Gakuin and South Carolina, 26th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.

The 2003 Kent Youel Invitational will be Tuesday and Wednesday at Kapolei. It also has 36 holes the first day and 18 the second, with 7:30 a.m. shotgun starts.

Cal won last year with an 870 total. Stanford's Kim Rowton (215) was the individual champion.

The 17-team field includes eighth-ranked Washington, No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 24 Oregon.


McClean ties for eighth at event

Four Hawai'i golfers missed the cut, but former resident and Aloha Section Player of the Year Dick McClean tied for eighth at the Callaway Golf PGA Senior Club Pro Championship last week in Florida. McLean, now living in La Quinta, Calif., won $4,800 and earned a spot in the 2004 Senior PGA Championship with his top-35 finish.

Rodney Acia, Dennis Rose and Steve Ho'okano from the Big Island, and Kaua'i's Rich Fite, failed to make the top 70 and advance. J.D. Ebersberger, formerly of the Big Island and now living in California, also missed the cut.


Ko Olina Golf Club Academy opens

The Ko Olina Golf Club Academy opened this month. The academy features digital video instruction, half-day to two-day schools, personalized instruction and group or corporate golf schools.

The academy also offers club-fitting, group specialty clinics, playing lessons, junior lessons and parent-junior lessons.

SHORT PUTTS: The 808Golf.com Ho'olaulea, Saturday and Sunday (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at Pearl Country Club, will raise funds for junior golf. Among the items for sale will be U.S. Golf Association logo merchandise. ... Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association members and non-members can sign up for Sunday's HSJGA College Workshop until tomorrow at noon, by calling 532-0559. The workshop will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the UH Athletic Complex, Room 241. Cost is $5 for non-members and free for HSJGA members.
