Vercruyssen places in world trampoline

Nani Vercruyssen of Hawai'i Academy, competing in the 11-12 age division, had two top-six finishes with the U.S. National Trampoline and Tumbling team at the World Age Group Games/World Championships in Hanover, Germany. The event was held Oct. 16 to 19.

Vercruyssen placed fifth in the double mini-trampoline with 29.7 points and sixth in the trampoline with 60.2 points.

SURFING

Irons advances: World champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i advanced to the third round of the Nova Schin Festival yesterday at Joaquina, Florianopolis, Brazil.

Irons defeated wildcard entry Fabricio Machado of Brazil in the second round, 10.67-9.17.

Irons is currently ranked No. 2 on surfing's World Championship Tour ratings. No. 1 Kelly Slater of Florida also advanced to the third round.

Kalani Robb, the only other Hawai'i entry in the contest, has yet to surf his second-round heat.

The contest is the 10th of 12 stops on this year's tour.

SAILING

UH's Mobin places sixth: University of Hawai'i's Lena Mobin placed sixth in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association (PCIYRA) Women's Single-Handed Championships this past weekend in San Diego.

Teammates Jennifer Warnock finished 11th, Blaire Ladd 13th and Sarah Dosek 14th.

Stanford's Ashley Frush was first and USC's Katie Clausen second.
