Where the ghouls are: A Halloween events calendar

Ghosts and ghouls and hearty partyers all dressed up will be out in force tonight as Halloween falls on a pau-hana Friday. If past Halloweens are any indication, Waikiki will be a zoo.

The last time Halloween fell on the prime party real estate of a Friday or Saturday night, the Maze Nightclub was three years away from opening, George W. Bush was still governor of Texas, Y2K was just starting to freak the masses, and Monica's "The First Night" was the No. 1 song in the country.

Year for year, it really has been a long, strange trip since 1998.

So it was hardly a surprise to find a haunted houseful of promoters and clubs rising to celebrate the return of a weekend All Hallow's Eve with more spook night offerings than our town has seen in, well, five years. In the accompanying rundown of Halloween events cobbled together by our hard-working calendar editor June Yago, you'll find costume parties (including a dead-celebrity one), live band fests featuring everything from rock and blues to country and contemporary Hawaiian, fright-themed DJ massives, and much more.

While figuring out the particulars of putting together a decent Robert Palmer costume (circa his 1985 Power Station stint), we also put together a list of the five Halloween after-hours picks that, combined, would be the party equivalent of a bagful of phat trick-or-treat candy. No boxes of Sunmaid raisins here.

Enter The Matrix

  • Wave Waikiki
  • 8 p.m. today to 4 a.m. tomorrow
  • $15 advance/$20 door before midnight
  • 941-0424

Mr. Anderson, er, Hansen, probably says it best. "The two biggest parties at the Wave are Halloween and New Year's. And Halloween is always a good night with a crazy crowd." Oh, that Flash! So modest.

In reality, two decades-plus of Halloween bashes to brag on have given the Wave's Halloween parties legendary status. "Reloaded" pretty much sucked. But "The Matrix" sequel's costumes were sorta cool. And you won't have to dress to theme to win the Wave's $1,000 costume contest. Whoa!

Get Freaky Halloween Mega Party 2003/Shockhouse: Terror In The Mansion

  • Blaisdell Exhibition Hall
  • 10 p.m. today to 3 a.m. tomorrow for Get Freaky/6 p.m. today to 2 a.m. tomorrow for Shockhouse
  • $20 (includes admission for both events)
  • (877) 750-4400

Could we resist a huge haunted house and all-ages dance party, all in one convenient location? Hardly. 00Spot and The Joynt are promising two "dance arenas" with room for "thousands" — one featuring hip-hop, booty and reggae; the other trance, house and drum-n-bass. Free entry to Tom Moffatt's already screamin' Shockhouse is included. And isn't the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall kind of spooky anyway? Dress up scary, sexy, or both for the $300 costume contest.

Halloween Bash

  • Breakers Restaurant, Hale'iwa Shopping Center
  • 5 p.m. today to 2 a.m. tomorrow
  • $10
  • 637-9898

Jonesing for a good reason to head out to the North Shore for a country-style Halloween party? Matty Liu and Heavy State Industries' Halloween Bash will rock the Breakers restaurant parking lot live with Humble Soul, THC, Quadraphonix, Microscopic Syllables, Psychotic Perverts and Filthy Degenerates (yes, the last two are bands, not costumed partyers).

Inside, DJs M Square and Mr. Inc. spin the hip-hop. "It'll be reggae, soul, funk and punk coming together in one party," said Liu. Unless you're planning to go trick-or-treating — we hear North Shore residents hand out the best candy — costumes are optional.

Wicked Weekend at J.C.'s Level 2, 2301 Kuhio

  • 10 p.m. today to 4 a.m. tomorrow
  • $10
  • 955-4852

Big Tom Lombardo can't throw down a party minus surprises. So when we found out Derek Daniels Productions was handling the "surprise" element of tonight's Wicked Weekend bash, we had to call Big Tom for the 411. Daniels, after all, was a dude we last witnessed cruising through Mist Nightclub on a monster Harley Davidson at one of Big Tom's Fresh parties.

All Big Tom would confirm is, "Derek has a salute to Halloween movies and themes planned." Expect male go-go dancers, outrageous costumes on patrons, and progressive trance, house and tribal all night from guest DJ Phil B from San Francisco. The party continues on Saturday.

The Dungeon 10-Year Anniversary Halloween Night

We don't know much about what those kinky folks who put on The Dungeon events have in store for their 10th Halloween party. But judging by past shindigs, it's bound to be interesting — with emphasis on the word "bound."

Among tonight's promised highlights: "the cage, the iron cross, flogging stocks," and, lest someone complain about their absence, "pervy projections and twisted visuals." Think of it as a haunted house for the Backseat Betty's crowd. Dig the leather out of the closet, leave the kids with the babysitter and a DVD of "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," and come reminisce on Dungeon Halloweens past. Where's my riding crop?

They're the undead or walking dead. According to Webster's, a corpse that's been brought back to "life," if you can call that a life. How did Halloween get started?

WHO STARTED IT: Halloween is a combination of celebrations created by the Celts and the Druids (Celtic priests). Later, Roman and Christian celebrations were combined with the Celtic celebration, and Halloween (All Hallow's Eve) was created.

WHAT: The Celtic new year began on Nov. 1, and they believed that the night before the new year, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of Oct. 31, they wore costumes and masks to scare away spirits.

WHERE it started: The Celts started it in what is now Ireland, Britain and northern France.

Some oppose celebrating Halloween

Some Christians, Jews and Muslims skip Halloween because of its pagan roots.

Others believe Halloween can be celebrated as simply a day of fun. That might include trick-or-treating or visiting haunted houses. If anyone feels uncomfortable participating in Halloween activities for whatever reason, there are other ways to celebrate.

Alternative ways to have fun:

Harvest parties

Celebrate the season! The time of thanksgiving is here.

Family fun fests

Activities often include face-painting, pumpkin-carving, bobbing for apples.
