Advertiser Staff

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is celebrating its first birthday, and everyone's invited to the festivities Saturday on the front lawn of the No. 1 Capitol District building. View the museum's collection, meet artists and try your hand at art, too, at interactive activities — all for free.

There's entertainment, too:

  • 10:30 a.m.: Opening ceremony and lion dance.
  • 11 a.m.: Honolulu Brass Quintet.
  • 11:45 a.m.: George and Keoki Kahumoku, slack-key guitar.
  • 12:45 p.m.: Galliard String Quartet.
  • 1:45 p.m.: Miyashiro Soho Kai, Okinawan koto.

Art activities include:

  • Rubberstamping with Shirley Hasenyager, Mari Sakamoto, Terry Hildebrand, Howard Farrant, James Koga and Kim Chai.
  • Sculpture and relief rubbing Satoru Abe, Fred Roster, John Koga, Carl Pao and Jason Teraoka.
  • Mixed-media collage with A. Kimberlin Blackburn, Ira Ono, Doug Young, Babs Miyano-Young, Carol Yotsuda and Harry Tsuchidana.

Since opening last November with a celebration, the museum has received more than 25,000 visitors, according to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

Hours are 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. 586-0900. For a map of free parking areas, see www.hawaii.gov/sfca.
