City crews to fix Hawai'i Kai sign

City workers — not independent contractors — will repair the Hawai'i Kai community sign fronting Kalaniana'ole Highway that officials have said was cracked by vandals.

The work will begin in November, said Manny Menendez, the mayor's representative at this week's Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board meeting.

Estimates indicated it would cost $18,000 to have a contractor repair the cracks.

The community objected, and the city has been working to find a less expensive way to fix the sign.

The nearly 2-year-old sign was erected at a cost of $117,623.
