Tour de Cure event set for Nov. 16

The Tour de Cure, a benefit bicycle ride for the American Diabetes Association, will be Nov. 16 at Kapi'olani Park.

The 50-kilometer event will begin at 7 a.m., while the 25-kilometer ride will start at 7:30.

Tour de Cure is a ride, not a race, for cyclists of all levels. The 50K course will go from Kapi'olani Park to Waimanalo and back, while the 25K course will go from Kapi'olani Park to Hawai'i Kai and back. Snacks and sports drinks will be available at rest stops. After the ride, food and entertainment will be provided to the riders.

Registration forms are available at Star Markets, The Bike Shop at 1149 South King St., and at McCully Bicycle and Sporting Goods at 2124 South King St.

AUTO RACING

Sprint series set: The United States Auto Club Sprint Car Racing Series will take on drivers from the Hawai'i Sprint Car Series on Nov. 14 and 15 at the Hawai'i Motor Speedway.

Qualifying and preliminary racing will begin at 5 p.m. both days. An open practice is scheduled for Nov. 12 at the Hawai'i Motor Speedway.

Admission for racing is $15 per person for persons age 11 and up, and $7 for children ages 5-10. A two-night pass is available for $25 for those 11 and older and $10 for kids ages 5-10. Children 4 and younger are free.



DIABETES WALK

Walk benefit tomorrow: The Juvenile diabetes Foundation Walk will be tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the Kapi'olani Park bandstand.

The walk will be 2.5 miles and will take place rain or shine.

TENNIS

Armitraj's nephew in Honolulu tourney

Duke University's Stephen Amritraj, nephew of Indian Davis Cup legend Vijay Amritraj, has been given a wild card into the main draw of the Honolulu Futures tennis tournament. The $15,000 men's event will be Nov. 8-16 at Diamond Head and Ala Moana.

Former Hawai'i Pacific All-American Mikael Maatta won the wild card tournament earlier this month, and Maui's Malino Oda and 'Aiea's Dennis Lajola took the doubles slot.

Lajola, an Iolani freshman who helped the U.S. win an international 14's title last summer, has been given a wild card into the singles qualifying for both the Honolulu and Waikoloa Futures (Nov. 17-23).

Yugoslavia's Darko Madjarovski is the highest-ranked player in Honolulu's main draw, at No. 332 in the world. The are seven players ranked inside the top 500, including American Doug Bohaboy (415).

Bob's Mob takes USTA 3.5 crown

Bob's Mob, based in Kane'ohe, won the 3.5 division at the USTA Junior Team Tennis Western Regional Championships, played recently at the El Paso Youth Tennis Center. The event was for players ages 14 and under.

Bob's Mob B won 103 games and lost just eight sets. K2TENS, from Honolulu, took third in the 3.0 division with 99 games, and 13 sets lost.
