THE LEFT LANE
Married ... with a title

Advertiser Staff

Each year, women across America come to the Hilton Hawaiian Village to compete for the title of "Mrs. America."

This year's activities are from Friday to Sept. 19, culminating with the taping of a two-hour prime-time television special for the PAX TV Network on Sept. 19, beside the hotel's lagoon. The show will be broadcast nationwide Saturday, Oct. 11.

Delegates range in age from 23 to 45, and the reigning Mrs. America, Kristi Leigh Phillips, is 27.

It's for a good cause

Last year, it was a small humanitarian effort. Jacque Traweek, a sales manager for the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa, raised money to cover a Cambodia orphanage's food costs for six months. This year, Traweek has a bigger goal: raising money for a new building at the orphanage.

Traweek is part of Airline Ambassadors International (www.airlineamb.com), a network of airline and travel-industry employees who volunteer as "Ambassadors of Goodwill" in their home communities and abroad. They assist children in need, deliver humanitarian aid to orphanages and clinics, and involve youth in humanitarian efforts around the world.

She is organizing "Compassionately Ever After — Creating Dreams for the Children of Cambodia." The $60 tax-deductible event, which includes pupus, a silent auction and guest artist and performers, is 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, Coconut Club, 21st floor. Silent-auction donations are welcome. For tickets or information, call Traweek at 348-4444.

A grand holiday

Sunday marks the 25th Anniversary of Grandparents Day, a holiday set aside for the first Sunday after Labor Day and signed into law by President Jimmy Carter.

Phil Waldrep, author of "The Grandparent Factor," encourages grandparents to establish a meaningful relationship with their grandchildren by starting with simple activities:

• Plant a family seed: Fill in a family tree together.

• Pretend to be a reporter: Use a video camera or cassette recorder to document a grandchild interviewing a grandparent about his/her life.

• Set up a photo shop: Write names on the backs of old family photos as you talk about family memories.

• Arts and Crafts: Parents can help the younger children to draw grandma and grandpa.
