Wai'anae pupil wins Leo award

Ilaisa Chang of the Wai'anae High School Leo Club, received the Leo of the Year Award at the District 50 Forum on Aug. 9.

"This award is given to 20 outstanding Leos throughout the world. With more than 140,000 Leos worldwide, this is quite an accomplishment," said International director Mel Nakamura.

The Leo of the Year Award recognizes a Leo's outstanding leadership skills, identifiable contributions to the development and growth of the Leo Club program, distinction in community and school activities outside of Leo commitments, and high ethical standards and integrity.


Five join Salvation Army board

Five community leaders were selected as new members of The Salvation Army Honolulu Advisory Board. They include Signe Godfrey, president and owner of Olsten Staffing Services, Inc.; Mary Ann Sacharski, director of advertising sales, Oceanic Time Warner Cable of Hawai'i; Caroline Ward Oda, head of school, St. Andrew's Priory School; Pam Chambers, president, Pam Chambers Presentations; and Mark Fukunaga, chairman and CEO, Servco Pacific, Inc.

The 46-member advisory board is charged with advising and assisting The Salvation Army in all its activities on O'ahu.


Foundation gets new director

The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific Foundation has named Selena K. Ching as its new executive director.

Ching has returned to Honolulu from New York where she was assistant director of development at The Rockefeller University. Her previous positions include serving as associate vice president, financial analysis and planning associate vice president, corporate affairs, for Prudential Securities in New York; director of special events for the School of American Ballet in New York; events associate for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation; academia adviser/program assistant at the McLaren School of Business at the University of San Francisco; and public affairs assistant/project coordinator for the Queen Emma Foundation.

Ching graduated from Punahou School and earned an MBA from the McLaren School of Business.


Chiang honored as top physician

Dr. Ton Ming Chiang, medical director of rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, has been named Physician of the Year by the Healthcare Association of Hawaii, home care and hospice division.

Dr. Chiang was honored for his excellence in providing patient care. He has more than 23 years as a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with particular expertise in the management of patients with amputations.

His diverse background includes obstetrics and engineering.


Student earns pilot certificate

University of North Dakota aerospace student Geoffrey Billingsley of Honolulu has received his Private Pilot Certificate from the university's John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. He is the son of Walter and Marilyn Billingsley of Honolulu.

"To earn his Private Pilot Certificate, Geoffrey successfully completed all academic and flight lab requirements as established by the Federal Aviation Administration and the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. ... Each certificate is a challenge to attain ... Geoffrey should be commended for his achievements," said UND Aerospace Dean Bruce Smith.
