Bruce Irons third in Japan surf meet

Kaua'i's Bruce Irons placed third in the Billabong Tahara Pro yesterday in 1- to 2-foot waves at Irago, Japan.

Irons received $6,000 and moved up to No. 11 on surfing's World Qualifying Series. The contest did not count toward the elite World Championship Tour.

Bruce Irons' older brother, Andy, is currently ranked No. 1 on the World Championship Tour.

Brazil's Raoni Monteiro won the contest and received $15,000. Another Brazilian, Marcelo Nunes, placed second.


SWIMMING

• Day sets world record: Nadine Day, a former Hawai'i high school swimming champion, set a world record in the 200-meter individual medley at the U.S. Masters Swimming Long Course National Championships in Piscataway, N.J.

Day, the former Nadine Takai and a Pearl City High graduate, clocked 2 minutes, 25.63 seconds to beat the previous record of 2:25.68 set by Karlyn Pipes-Nielsen in 1996 in the women's 30-35 age division.

Day won five other national titles representing Illinois Masters in the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 400 individual medley.

She also broke the national record in the 5K Postal on Aug. 22. Her time of 1:04:24.99 bettered the record of 1:07:21.90 set by Jill Gellaty in 2000.

Day is a physical therapist and vice president for the Central Illinois Masters Swim Association.


GOLF

• Carll wins at Hapuna: Ko Olina head professional Kevin Carll shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to win the Hapuna Round-Up low pro and team titles yesterday at Hapuna Golf Course on the Big Island.

Carll, who won $1,000, had a two-day score of 72-68—140. Kevin Hayashi, a pro at Hapuna, was second at 75-69—144.

Carll was joined by amateurs John Hoffee, Scott Sakata and Brett Smith to win the team title with a score of 124-199—323.

• Ma wins playoff: Matthew Ma sank a birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat Brandan Kop in yesterday's Barbers Point Invitational at Barbers Point Golf Course.

Ma (68-74-74) and Kop (70-74-72) finished the three-day tournament with a 216 total. Joe Phengsavath was two strokes behind at 70-72-76—218.

Mervin Matsumoto won the senior flight (75-72-72—219).


BOXING

• Two national champs: Wai'anae's Boston Salmon and Kawika Tangjian won national titles at the 2003 Ringside Labor Day National Championships at Kansas City, Mo., yesterday.

Salmon won a unanimous decision over Hector Martinon of San Jose, Calif., in the boys 11-12, 85-pound division. Tangjian defeated Jermell Charlo of Houston, 4-1, to win the boys 13-14, 95-pound division.

Both boxers are members of the Evolution Boxing Club and coached by Bruce Kawano.

More than 1,400 boxers from six countries participated in the tournament.


MEETING

• Jones to speak: University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones will review film of Saturday's game against Appalachian State at today's luncheon of the Na Koa Football Club.

The booster club meets at 11:30 a.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center on the UH campus.

UH associate head coach and defensive coordinator George Lumpkin is also scheduled to attend.
