TIM MONTGOMERY

Former University of Hawai'i center fielder Tim Montgomery said he has signed with the Cleveland Indians, who picked him in the 23rd round in the June draft.

Because he was signed late — the minor league season ended yesterday — his first assignment will be in the fall instructional league at the Indians training camp in Winter Haven, Fla. Camp starts Sept. 19 and lasts about a month for individual instruction, he said.

He spent the summer playing with the Bend (Ore.) Elks of the Pacific International League.

Montgomery said he got a $35,000 signing bonus, plus the equivalent of two years of college should he decide to complete his degree.

"For the spot I was picked, it worked out great," Montgomery said.

Montgomery, who had a season of eligibility left with the Rainbows, led the team with nine home runs, while batting .245 with 26 RBIs in 47 games.
