Getting around without TheBus: Information you can use

If you're driving, leave home at least 30 to 45 minutes earlier than usual. To cut down on the number of traffic-slowing stalls on the road, vehicles should be checked and maintained. Share rides (car pools, van pools), bike or walk to help cut down on traffic.

CityVan program

  • CityVan program: Limited seating for passengers with reservations. Free. Call 523-4381. Morning and return routes are listed below:

Passengers will be dropped off at Chinatown Gateway, where they can take shuttles to the following locations:

  • CityVan shuttle stops to and from Hotel Street: Free. No reservations needed at:

  • Ala Moana Center at Kona Street (diamondhead-bound)
  • Ala Moana Center at the Ala Moana bus shelter ('ewa-bound)
  • Waikiki at the Hale Koa Hotel opposite the parking structure
  • Waikiki at the zoo
  • University of Hawai'i at Sinclair Circle
  • In Kalihi at Kapalama Elementary School across from Kamehameha Shopping Center

Express service

  • Limited stop bus express service: At about 5:30 p.m., 15 buses leave Hotel Street for the following locations:

  • Blaisdell Park
  • Windward City Shopping Center
  • Kane'ohe District Park
  • Mililani Park and Ride
  • Waikele Center
  • 'Ewa Beach Shopping Center
  • Filipino Community Center (Waipahu)

Drivers willing to offer rides and people in need of a lift are encouraged to hook up at these locations:

Zipper/HOV lanes

  • The state Department of Transportation will open the H-1 Freeway zipper lane from 4:30 until 8:45 a.m. for vehicles with two or more occupants. Normally at least three occupants per vehicle are required from 5 to 7 a.m., and two required from 7 to 8:30 a.m.
  • The high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes along H-1, H-2 and Moanalua freeways and Kalaniana'ole Highway will be open to all vehicles, regardless of the number of occupants.

University of Hawai'i-Manoa

• UH-Manoa will potentially have 1,900 additional parking spaces available on a first-come, first-served basis, both on and off campus. Priority will be given to vehicles carrying two or more passengers that arrive at the Bachman lawn before 10 a.m. Additional on-campus sites will be at Kennedy Theatre-McCarthy Mall, the Music Building, Klum Gym gravel area and the Lab School lawn. To offset costs and provide for security, the normal $3 parking fee will be assessed at all on-campus lots.

Off-campus parking sites: Blaisdell Center, Kaka'ako Waterfront Park, Manoa Valley District Park and Ala Wai Community Park. No parking fee except at Blaisdell, where parking will cost the normal $5.

Limited shuttle service will be provided to the university and all off-campus parking sites. Only students, faculty and staff with a valid ID can ride the shuttle. See www.hawaii.edu /busstrike for shuttle schedules.
