Siren test rescheduled

The state Civil Defense rescheduled its monthly test of sirens and the Emergency Alert System for Monday at 11:45 a.m.

Normally, tests of Civil Defense sirens and the Emergency Alert System are conducted simultaneously on the first working day of the month. George Burnett, Telecommunications Branch manager for the state Civil Defense, said the postponement was made to avoid any confusion regarding the monthly test and the possibility of Hurricane Jimena passing over the Islands last weekend.

Veterans seek zoning change

The city Department of Planning and Permitting is seeking comment on a zoning change request that would allow the O'ahu Veterans Council to build a meeting facility in what is now a community center and park in Foster Village.

The veterans council is asking for a zoning change from P-2 general preservation to R-5 residential so it can tear down a 50-year-old community center on Haloa Drive and build a $2.8 million state-financed center with the facilities intended to be used by veterans and residents.

To comment, call Rob Reed at 523-4402 by Sept. 22.
