Carpet fire empties store

About 200 employees and customers were evacuated early today from Wal-Mart’s Kunia store at 94-595 Kupuohi St. because of a carpet fire. The store was closed about 12:45 a.m. and had not reopened by midmorning. Management refused comment.

The small fire was extinguished by the time firefighters arrived, HFD spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada said. Firefighters cleared the store of smoke before leaving.

Fire investigators said the cause of the fire appears to be vapors from glue being used to lay new carpet. The fire was put out by employees using fire extinguishers.

Damage estimates are pending an appraisal by store officials.

Petra Pera is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail. Police said the 39-year-old man being shot at was not injured.
