Tonight's Must-See

"7 Days in September," 6 p.m., A&E. The aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks has been shown often and well. Still, this compilation brings extra touches. It uses footage from 28 people — amateurs and pros —plus their personal commentaries. We hear from Jenny Tolan, a college student who loves New York. We hear from Alan Roth, an activist. "I always looked upon the trade centers as a symbol of global capitalism and greed," Roth says. He soon found human moments to love. So did King Molapo, a filmmaker from South Africa. "I went out in fear that the city was in chaos," he says. "Instead, I found an expression of unity." Cameras captured the early grit and confusion, plus the warmth. They found little of the combative anger long associated with New Yorkers. Three days after the attacks, we see knots of strangers arguing. As a young woman and an old man yell, she breaks into tears; they wrap into each other's arms. "We're yelling and hugging," one man says. They were being New Yorkers again.

Of Note

Football, 7 p.m., ABC. To the ABC people, this is "Monday Night Football on Thursday." TV people think that way. This is the start of the real season. The Washington Redskins host the New York Jets.

"Friends," 7 p.m., NBC. This busy, 40-minute rerun has three major stories. Ross tries to help Joey impress the brainy beauty Ross adores. Chandler and Monica try to slip into a fertility clinic and Rachel tries to slip into a massage spa that competes with Phoebe.

"Will & Grace," 7:40 p.m., NBC. Karen's divorce case suddenly has strange combinations. She is represented by a bumbling young lawyer, played by Macaulay Culkin, and her husband is represented by her friend, Will.

"Temptation Island 3," 8 p.m., Fox. Last week's opener asked each person to choose one tempter they wanted to keep away from their mate. Then came the twist: Those will be the exact people who go on dates with the mates tonight.

"Scrubs," 8:20 p.m., NBC. Here's the episode that NBC scheduled last week, then pulled. (It's been doing that a lot lately.) Heather Locklear plays a drug-company representative overcoming Dr. Cox's hatred of drug-company greed.

"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. This episode focuses heavily on Jack (Anthony LaPaglia). His zealous approach could damage the case against a suspected molester.
