Musashimaru to miss tourney

MUSASHIMARU

TOKYO — Struggling yokozuna (grand champion) Musashimaru will sit out the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament starting Sunday, officials from the Musashigawa stable said, fueling speculation about his retirement.

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani of Wai'anae , pulled out of July's Nagoya tournament after suffering three straight losses. He has either dropped out or sat out the past five tournaments while recovering from surgery on his left wrist.

Musashimaru, 32, is one of the sumo's most successful foreign-born wrestlers. He was second to reach the ancient sport's highest rank of yokozuna, and has won 12 Emperor's Cups, more than any current wrestler.

Akebono, or Waimanalo's Chad Rowan, the first foreign-born yokozuna, retired in 2001.
