Dick Evans Memorial race to circle O'ahu on Sunday

Advertiser Staff

The Dick Evans Memorial Bike race — a 112-mile race around O'ahu — will be Sunday.

Participants can register in person tomorrow at The Bike Shop, 1149 S. King Street, with a late fee of $65.

The Evans race is not the same as other long-distance races around the island, said John B. Kelley, the race director the past two years.

"There's a big difference between a century ride, which is fully supported," Kelley said, and this race. "The Dick Evans is the peak of racing in Hawai'i for those who are in top shape and are ready to race for five hours straight."

A United States Cycling Federation license is required for Sunday's race. A one-day license is available for $5.

Evans, an accomplished cyclist, died in 1982 in a collision with a tractor-trailer while riding his bike near Beretania and 'A'ala streets.

For more information, contact Kelley at 525-8422, 732-0711 or jkelley@abinc.com.
