Free rides from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. today

 •  Bus union would tap wages saved during strike

The city will operate a free shuttle service today to help people who need transportation because of the bus strike.

Chinatown Gateway Plaza at Hotel and Bethel streets will serve as the hub for most of the school buses that will be used for the shuttle service. The shuttles will operate from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; riders are asked to be flexible because the 15 school buses will not run on an exact schedule.

Signs will be posted at the shuttle stops on the circular routes. Six routes will includes stops at the Gateway Plaza while the other two — North Shore and Mililani-Wahiawa-Hale'iwa — will circulate within those communities.

• The schedule

• Kalihi — Four stops: Chinatown Gateway, Kohou and Dillingham Boulevard, School Street at Kapalama Elementary School, School Street at Lanakila Street.

• Wai'anae — Six stops: Chinatown Gateway, Waikele Shopping Center, Fil-Com Center in Waipahu, Leoku/Farrington Highway (Daiei), Kapolei Transit Center, Wai'anae Mall.

• 'Ewa Beach-Pearlridge — Six stops: Chinatown Gateway, Pearlridge Center, Sam's Club, St. Francis-West, 'Ewa Beach Town Center, 'Ewa Beach Shopping Center.

• Chinatown Gateway-Ala Moana-Waikiki-University — Six stops: Chinatown Gateway, Ala Moana Center (Kona Street), Kalia Road/Fort DeRussy, Kalakaua Avenue (Waikiki police station), Honolulu Zoo, University of Hawai'i Sinclair Circle.

• Kailua-Waimanalo — Five stops: Kailua town (Longs Drug Store), Enchanted Lake Shopping Center, Waimanalo (Shima's Market), Waimanalo Post Office, Chinatown Gateway.

• Salt Lake-Airport — Three stops: Chinatown Gateway, Salt Lake Shopping Center, Kamehameha Highway at Pai'ea.

• COMMUNITY SHUTTLES

• North Shore — Four stops: Hale'iwa (North Shore Market Place), Sunset Beach (Foodland), Ka'a'awa 7-Eleven, Windward Mall.

• Mililani-Wahiawa-Hale'iwa — Three stops: Mililani Town Center, Wahiawa (Kamehameha Highway at California Avenue), Hale'iwa (North Shore Market Place).
