Hoku winners headline arts gala

Who: The Makaha Sons, Jake Shimabukuro and Amy Hanaial'i Gilliom perform in the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education's Celebrate the ARTS! Alliance Awards 2003 event at 7 p.m.Oct. 11 at the Hawai'i Theatre. The program also features the Hawai'i Youth Symphony String Quartet and Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus. Elizabeth Lindsey Buyers hosts.

What: This year's Alfred Preis Award honors Robert R. Midkiff, president and director of the Atherton Family Foundation. Arts Excellence Awards go to Kula Elementary on Maui, Hanalei School on Kaua'i, Waiahole Elementary, Waiau Elementary, Noelani Elementary and Hanahau'oli School.
