Waikoloa event raised $27,380

Through the recent 12th annual Rubber Duckie Race and Fourth of July Celebration, the Kings' Shops at Waikoloa Beach Resort raised $27,380 to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii.

Sponsors of this year's event were Aloha Television Network, Big Island Honda, Big Island Visitor, Bank of Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank, Hilton Waikoloa Village, KISS/KAPA radio stations, Koehnen's Interiors, Roy's Waikoloa Bar & Grill, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, This Week Magazine, Vixen Sportfishing, Waikoloa Beach Marriott, Waikoloa Village Market and West Hawaii Today.


Scholarships help employees

Hawaiian Cement has announced the recipients of its 2003 Scholarship Awards Program. The program is designed to recognize the academic achievements of college-bound children of its employees. The recipients:

  • Chad Itokazu, $8,000 award. He is a graduate of Pearl City High School who will attend the University of New Mexico.
  • Justin Muraki, $8,000 award. He is a graduate of Mid-Pacific Institute who will attend the University of Hawai'i.
  • Cherlyn Koizumi, $4,000 award. She is a graduate of Pearl City High School who will attend Leeward Community College.


Punahou senior recognized

Kelly Kanayama, a Punahou School senior, has been awarded a scholarship by Fulfillment Corporation of America. The $500 scholarship recognizes academic and community accomplishments as well as appreciation of traditional family and ancestral values. Kanayama will attend Washington University of St. Louis, majoring in English and linguistics.


Three to attend North Dakota

Three O'ahu students have been awarded scholarships to attend the University of North Dakota. They are Colin Namba of 'Ewa Beach, Tara Eavey of Honolulu and Martin Cameron of Kapolei.


$5,000 to pay for fire safety

The PacifiCare Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by PacifiCare Health Systems Inc., has donated $5,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii.

The money will be used to help pay for the cost of installing a fire escape and staircase to meet fire code requirements.

Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a residential facility that serves as a "home away from home" for families seeking specialized medical treatment for their ill children.
