Kahuku routs Roosevelt, 45-0

KAHUKU — The Kahuku High School football team, shocked by Roosevelt's "Duck" and "Goose" offense in last year's biggest upset, turned the Rough Riders into mere road kill last night in a 45-0 whitewash at Carleton E. Weimer Field.

Kahuku, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide poll of media and coaches, improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference-East. Roosevelt fell to 1-2, 0-2.

The Rough Riders stunned Kahuku last season thanks in large part to gimmick offensive sets in which a center and three skill players were isolated on one side of the field with the rest of the unit spread on the other side. But last night, things took a turn for the worst early when Roosevelt fumbled on the game's first offensive play and the Red Raiders capitalized with quarterback Waika Carvalho's 20-yard touchdown run to give them a quick 7-0 lead.

"We tend to do that a lot this year — last week we had an interception on the first play," Rough Riders coach Les Parrilla said. "We're young, and at key positions, we need more game experience."

Spencer Hafoka's 40-yard punt return set up a 5-yard touchdown run which helped put Kahuku up 14-0 with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter. Carvalho connected with Hafoka on an 11-yard touchdown pass to help make it 21-0 early in the second quarter, and Carvalho found Frank Bracewell on a 4-yard scoring pass to make it 27-0 with 4:34 left in the half.

Roosevelt came out in conventional offensive formations for much of the half, except for one possession late in the first quarter and another late in the second. But none of their plays seemed to work, as the Rough Riders entered the red zone only once throughout the game — on a fumble recovery early in the first quarter.

Roosevelt finished with just 20 yards in total offense.

"We couldn't make plays — we couldn't run, we couldn't throw, we couldn't make things happen," Parrilla said. "It was just basic things, but Kahuku is a good team and they actually took it easy on us by not blitzing a lot."

The Red Raiders' offense, which struggled in last year's 23-13 loss, looked sharp and crisp in generating a well-balanced 453 total yards (207 rushing, 246 passing).

"This year our offense is better; our goal is to score on every drive," Hafoka said. "We didn't want to go through what happened last year. We didn't want to take anyone lightly."

Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai said this season's offense has benefitted from experience.

"Last year we were still trying to fill in shoes, we didn't have much of an offense," Livai said. "Our defense is always the same, because that's where we put our best guys, but even a great defense can only do so much. This year our offense is really helping us. At least they're giving our defense a chance to rest."
