KRISTY NISHIDA, a financial adviser with American Express, has earned the Mercury Award for achieving outstanding business production during her first 20 weeks with the company.

Previous to joining American Express, Nishida worked for Aloha Airlines, Scholastic Book Fairs and Hilo Community Schools for Adults. She received her bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo.

FITZGERALD AGUILAR has been appointed as area director of operations for Marriott International, Pacific Islands and Vacation Clubs. He replaces Bill Countryman, who was promoted to general mana-ger of Maui Marriott Resort and Ocean Club.

In his new position, Aguilar will be responsible for all operational support and oversight of 13 hotel resorts and vacation clubs in Hawai'i and Guam. He will be based in Honolulu.

JEANIE CHUN, president of GSL Enterprises Inc., received the Hawaii 2003 Businessman of the Year Award from the Business Advisory Council of the National Republican Congressional Committee in Washington. Born in Seoul, Korea, she came to the United States in 1968 and opened her own garment business in 1975. She is also head designer for the Jean Michel USA, Women's Designer golf sportswear. She often donates her time to put on fashion shows for local charities.

MATTHEW PAPANIA has been appointed president of Oils of Aloha. He joined the company in 1991 as production manager and eventually moved on to become vice president of operations. During his 12 years with the company, Papania has dealt with all aspects of the business, from machine maintenance and repair to operations improvement, sales, personnel and product development. He is a Waialua resident.

• Honolulu Publishing Company president, Jim Myers has named the following:

  • TOP CHAPMAN, editor. He is the former partner and editor-in-chief of Emphasis Inc., the world's largest publisher of airline magazines that was sold to Time Inc. in 1998.
  • BRETT UPRICHARD, managing editor. His 24 years with Honolulu Publishing have encompassed a range of editorial and photographic responsibilities for its consumer, business and visitor-industry publications.
  • DANA LEHMAN, program/promotion manager. Lehman is a former account executive with Matrix Media of Hawaii and Sheila Donnelly & Associates.

• Mililani Golf Club has appointed LANCE SUGIMURA as merchandiser. He is now responsible for all Pro Shop purchases including golf equipment, balls, apparel and related accessories, as well as promotions and special events.

He is a Mililani Town resident who attended Leeward Community College.

AL LINTON has been named general manager of Kalu Glass Company Inc. Linton recently moved to Hawai'i from Guam, where he was the general manager of Sorensen Pacific Broadcasting Inc. He has a bachelor of science degree in radio/television and marketing from Southern Illinois University. He is a Kailua resident.

CHASSIDY SHINNO, student services specialist at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, has been named the 2003 American Business Women's Association Woman of the Year for the Na Kilohana O Wahine Chapter. She currently serves as chapter president. A University of Hawai'i graduate, she is active in university affairs.

JOSLYN FIDDLER recently joined Hawaiian Isles Kona Coffee Co. as the new Hawaii military sales manager. She will be responsible for the division's sales management and sales force activities. She formerly worked for Verizon Wireless as a major account manager servicing government, military and corporate accounts.

• Carlsmith Ball LLP, a Limited Law Partnership has announced:

  • DUANE MIYASHIRO has been made a partner concentrating on litigation and dispute resolution.
  • GERALD SUMIDA recently returned to the firm as a counsel after serving as the general counsel of the Asian Development Bank based in Manila, Philippines. He is resuming his practice in the areas of corporate business structure and operations and energy development.
  • J. THOMAS MALONEY JR. has joined the firm as Of Counsel. His specialty will be ERISA benefits and executive compensation.
  • ERIC S.T. YOUNG has joined the firm as Of Counsel concentrating his practice in the areas of estate planning, probate and trust administration and estate and trust litigation.
  • RONALD MICHIOKA has joined the firm as Of Counsel, concentrating his practice in litigation and dispute resolution.
  • MELISSA HALL has joined the firm as associate concentrating her practice in corporate and business labor, employment and employee benefits.
  • JERILYNN ONO HALL has returned to the firm as Of Counsel concentrating her practice in real property and land use. She is based in Hilo, Hawai'i.

ANDY LIPOSKY has accepted the position of branch manager of ThyssenKrupp's Hawai'i operation. He has 36 years of elevator industry experience. For the past seven years he has managed new installation and modernization sales for Dover Elevator and now Thyssen-Krupp in the Islands.

DAREN NAVARRO has been named housekeeping assistant manager for Holua Resort on the Big Island. Holua's front-office manager, Cindy Stowell, was recently awarded honorable mention from the Hawaii Hotel Association for her professional accomplishments.

• Local technology provider INETS has added two new account executives to its staff. They are:

  • RYAN BURGE, who will work with federal accounts, developing and maintaining client relationships by providing comprehensive technology solutions in the areas of network integration, Web-site development and ISP service and training.
  • BRIAN OKAZAKI, who will work with the corporate sector. He specializes in system design and the integration of various telecommunication devices with new and existing networks.
  • INETS has also named network engineer CYNTHIA WANG to its network integration team. She will be responsible for consulting, planning and implementation of network system design, including systemwide roll-outs and migration projects as well as administering and maintaining networks for clients as well as the company.

• Coffee Partners Hawaii (Starbucks Coffee) has announced the promotion of employees RACHEL FRITZ and MARK FAILDO to new district manager positions.

Fritz will oversee operations at Windward sites, including customer service, growth plans and management strategy.

Faildo will oversee stores in the Honolulu and Windward areas. He will monitor customer service, help with new store openings and coordinate staffing and training.

• Wachovia Securities has named TOM SAKAI a member of the firm's Premier Advisor Program for the second year in a row. This distinction reflects his achievement of professional success through a consistent commitment to client service.

JERRY CABAIS and ALISON HONDA have joined Aston Hotels & Resorts Hawaii, the Mahana at Kaanapali Hotel. Cabais is the new front-office manager and Honda is the new reservations supervisor.

A 16-year veteran of the hospitality industry, Cabais has worked in guest services, housekeeping and guest relations.

Honda brings more than 10 years of experience to her new position, nine of which were spent at the Ritz Carlton of Kapalua.

• Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa has named KALANI NAKOA to the position of director of sales and marketing. Formerly the associate director of sales for the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa, Nakoa has 23 years of experience in the hospitality industry.

VALERIE MICHALESKI has been named sales team leader at AT&T HawaiI. She has an extensive background in training, coaching and sales, for inbound and outbound sales centers as well as in the banking industry.
