Big Island has power failure

HILO, Hawai'i — About 4,600 customers on the Big Island were without power for a short time early yesterday after a steam turbine generator suddenly tripped offline, Hawai'i Electric Light Co. officials said. The Hamakua Energy Partners' turbine went offline at 8:34 a.m.

About 2,900 customers had power restored within minutes after other generating units were activated. The remaining customers had power restored by 9:35 a.m.

Hamakua Energy Partners is investigating what caused the generator to go offline, HELCO said.
