Drifting kayak was abandoned

KIHEI, Maui — The Coast Guard said it found a blue, single-person kayak — with a cooler and two fishing poles aboard — drifting a mile off Kama'ole Beach in Maui's Kihei area yesterday, but ended the search for its owner when he telephoned and said he was ashore.

The kayak's owner told the Coast Guard he abandoned it Sunday when the kayak capsized in the high winds. He swam to shore, thinking the little boat was going to sink.

"He'd like to get his kayak back," a spokesperson said.

The day-and-a-half search cost $88,600 and included a 15-foot utility boat and an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter.

Part of Liliha St. closed today

A 12-inch water main rupture will keep Liliha Street closed between Ihe and Panui Streets today. Police will reroute traffic to Bates and Judd streets. All four lanes were severely damaged yesterday by the water that warped the road surface, according to the Board of Water Supply. Crews were expected to work into the night, and a contractor was to be called in this morning to make emergency repairs.
