UH ends soccer road trip with tie

The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team concluded its three-game road trip with a 2-2 tie with UC Riverside yesterday.

Natasha Kai and Arlene Devitt both scored first-half goals for the Rainbow Wahine as they took an early 2-0 lead, but failed to hold on.

Kai scored in the 12th minute on assists from Devitt and Natalie Groenewoud.

Devitt scored unassisted in the 27th minute.

The Rainbow Wahine (3-1-1) return home to host the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic, where they will face Utah Valley State on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Atay honored by WAC: UH goalkeeper Mahie Atay was named the Western Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Rainbow Wahine to shutouts over Cal State Northridge (2-0) and Long Beach State (1-0). It is the first honor for Atay, who was selected to the all-WAC second team last season.

Bruce Irons fifth: Kaua'i's Bruce Irons tied for fifth in the Boost Mobile Pro yesterday at Lower Trestles, Calif.

Irons was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Brazil's Victor Ribas, 15.33-9.83.

Richie Lovett won the contest by defeating Taj Burrow in an all-Australian final. Lovett received $30,000 for the victory.

Irons, an unranked surfer who was invited to the contest as a wildcard, received $8,000.

Andy Irons remains the No. 1-ranked surfer on the 2003 World Championship Tour. Through seven of 12 contests, Irons has 5,760 points; Kelly Slater of Florida is No. 2 with 5,352.
