No injuries in copter landing

HILO, Hawai'i — A Sunshine Helicopters Inc. tour carrying a pilot and six tourists had a hard landing in a lava field in the Saddle Road area yesterday, but no one was hurt.

Ross Scott, president and owner of Sunshine, said the pilot set the helicopter down around noon after heavy clouds blew in between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

It landed at about 8,500- feet elevation on Mauna Loa, just inside the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Officials said it was in a wilderness area near Red Hill Cabin and a 1984 lava flow.

Scott said the pilot had more than 9,000 hours of flight time, but was forced into the landing by the weather change. He did not identify the pilot.

The helicopter, a singleengine ASTAR 350 BA, seats six passengers, Scott said. The passengers and pilot were taken to Hilo.

The National Park Service said the helicopter sustained damage to both skids and its underbelly. Scott said he expects the craft can be flown back to Kona.

An investigation into the incident will begin today.
