Heavy rainfall hits parts of O'ahu

On satellite photos today, the puffy clouds were too small to be called a storm system.

“It is just a little glob of moisture,” said National Weather Service Forecaster Hans Rosendal.

Well, don’t judge a glob by its cloud cover.

This one dumped nearly 14 inches of rain during the 24-hour period that ended at 8 a.m. today at the Wilson Tunnel and about 12 inches above Waikane Stream, which briefly overflowed this morning and stalled cars, Rosendal said.

The weather service issued an urban and small-stream flood advisory through 8:45 a.m. from Hawai‘i Kai north to La‘ie.

Rain along windward O‘ahu was tapering off by mid-morning as the showers passed to the northwest.

Runoff was expected to last throughout the day, Rosendal said.

The weather should be good over the next few days, although afternoon mauka showers are possible, he said.

“It looks sunny and pleasant most of the time,” he said.

“Light winds at least through tomorrow and some semblance of tradewinds by Saturday.”

A section of Kamehameha Highway between the Hygienic Store and the poi factory in WaiÅhole was closed to traffic today from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. because of ponding on the roadway, said Doug Aton of O‘ahu Civil Defense.

Aton did not report any other serious weather-related problems.
