Pedestrian killed on Big Island
An unidentified man was killed Tuesday when he was struck by a van on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway about seven-tenths of a mile north of the Hualalai Resort in Ka'upulehu, North Kona, on the Big Island.
Police said a rented 2003 Chevrolet van being driven south by William Carr, of Visalia, Calif., struck the pedestrian in the southbound lane shortly before 6:51 p.m.

The death was the 22nd traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared with 18 at the same time last year.
Intruders rob Big Island man
Two armed men forced their way into a Honaunau home yesterday morning and robbed a 49-year-old man, police said.
Sometime between 8 and 8:15 a.m., two men carrying two handguns and a shotgun forced their way into the Big Island home, overpowered the victim and bound him with duct tape, police were told. The robbers searched the house, stole cash and valuables, and left on foot.

Book sale slated Saturday
The Friends of 'Ewa Beach Public and School Library will conduct a book sale from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the library, 91-950 North Road.
Members of the Friends will be allowed entry at 9 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the library. Free parking is available.

Free legal clinics offered
Waimanalo Health Center will host a series of free legal clinics monthly through December beginning with the first session from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii will provide consultations concerning family and general law.
Residents must undergo an initial screening. To schedule a screening, call 528-7046 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The other clinics are scheduled for the same time on Oct. 11, Nov. 8 and Dec. 13.

Safety events slated at mall
Pearlridge Center will hold a Public Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, featuring demonstrations and representatives from police, firefighters, paramedics and Civil Defense officials.
Emergency vehicles will be on display at the Pearlridge Uptown main entrance, and educational displays will be featured inside.
