UH honors HCC coordinator

Wilfred Arakaki of Honolulu Community College has been named recipient of the University of Hawai'i's 2003 Willard Wilson Award for Distinguished Service to the Community.

Arakaki is the coordinator of the Apprenticeship and Journeyworker Training Program at HCC. He was recognized for his resourcefulness in working with business and industry representatives to help develop a program that contributes to the workforce in Hawai'i.

Arakaki also is recognized by his colleagues for his efforts to help others. For an HCC fund-raising event, he solicited monetary donations and secured numerous items for a silent auction. The fund-raiser had a net profit of more than $16,000.


Fun Factory/UH scholars named

The following 2003 high school graduates have received Fun Factory/University of Hawai'i Scholarships: Christian Cook and Royce Hanada of Kapa'a High; Dawn Egusa, Richard Pigao and Sheryl Tong of Pearl City; Michael Karlson of Kealakehe; Lai Kin Kwong of Kaiser; K'Ley Legaspi of Kaua'i; Alisa Amian, Melanie Li and Joyce Nip of Moanalua; Michelle Macedonio of 'Aiea; Christine Mattos and Katrina Thompson of Waimea; Suzannah Mills of Baldwin; Brandon Miyashiro of Castle; Jennifer Przygodziniski of Hawaii Preparatory Academy; Michelle Sagario of King Kekaulike; Noe Sekimoto of Kalani; and Tristan Nino Sotto of Waipahu.


Press club gives scholarships

The Big Island Press Club has awarded scholarships to four students pursuing careers in journalism. Two $1,500 Robert C. Miller Scholarships were awarded to Peter Sur, a University of Oregon journalism major entering his senior year, and to Emma Yuen, a 2002 graduate of Hilo High School who enters Stanford University this fall.

The $500 Jack Markey Scholarship was awarded to Timothy O. Bryan, a freelance videographer who is attending the University of Hawai'i at Hilo this year.

The $500 Yukino Fukabori Scholarship has been awarded to Raenette Marino, who is studying communications at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo.
