GOLF BRIEFS
Magazine has UHS senior among the 'Faces in the Crowd'

By Ann Miller
Advertiser Staff Writer

Travis Toyama, who turned 17 on Tuesday, leaped into the Hawai'i golf spotlight last year when he became the youngest Manoa Cup winner in the 95-year history of the event.

Now Toyama, a University High senior, is in the national spotlight. He was featured in the Faces in the Crowd section of the Sept. 8 edition of Sports Illustrated for his exploits at this year's 35th Annual Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic.

Toyama trailed by eight strokes after the opening round. He shot consecutive 5-under-par 66s and closed with a 70 to win the boys title by 10 strokes. That broke the tournament record for winning margin originally set by Tiger Woods.

Toyama will be honored tomorrow at Sports Day at the Capitol, along with Stephanie Kono, Bobbi Kokx, the 'Aiea Orioles and the Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's and women's tennis teams.

Kono, a Punahou eighth grader, won two of the three women's golf majors this year (Jenny K. Invitational and State Stroke Play). Kokx, a Kihei school teacher, defended her title in the State Match Play Championship.

The Orioles were the 2003 Cal Ripken (9-10 age group) Hawai'i State champions and placed third at the Pacific Southwest Regional.

BYU-Hawai'i won the NCAA Division II women's and men's titles.

The ceremony honoring "young athletes who have excelled" will be at 2 p.m. in the governor's chambers on the fifth floor. The public is invited.

Hawai'i resorts make top 100

Hawai'i resorts make up nearly a fifth of the 2003 Conde Nast Traveler magazine's Readers Pick Top 100 Golf Resorts.

The nearly 6,000 readers who participated in the survey have an average handicap of 19.3. They were asked to judge course design, speed of play, pro staff, accommodations, food and other activities.

The Ko'ele and Manele Bay Resorts are first and fourth in the survey, respectively. The two Lana'i sites have been at or near the top all eight years of the survey.

Two Big Island resorts — No. 5 Four Seasons Resort Hualalai and No. 10 Fairmont Orchid (formerly Orchid at Mauna Lani) — are also in the Top 10.

Of the 65 American resorts in the Top 100, 17 are here. Along with the first four, those honored, in order:

Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, Four Seasons Resort Wailea, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Princeville Resort, Hyatt Regency Kaua'i Resort & Spa, Kapalua Bay Hotel, Fairmont Kea Lani, Grand Wailea Resort, JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa, Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort, and Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club.

SHORT PUTTS: Honolulu's Jorge Ortiz shot 332 over 72 holes at the 20th anniversary DuPont Coolmax World Amateur Handicap Championship. Ortiz's net score was 291, good for 13th in Flight 5. 'Aiea's Ian MacLean shot 362 for a net 313 and was 66th in Flight 7. The tournament, which attracted nearly 4,000 golfers from all 50 states and 25 countries, was played last month at Myrtle Beach, S.C. ... Hawai'i's Kimo Greene, who just turned 50, will play in two Sunbelt Senior Tour events this month in the Raleigh, N.C., area. Greene, a surfboard shaper by profession, also plans to play the Monday qualifier for the Champions Tour SAS Championship next week.
