Mei Lwun spins at two parties

DJ Mei Lwun of Om Records returns to Hawai'i with two appearances this week. First up is a show at the Pussycat Lounge's monthly Glitter N Glamour night Tuesday, where the theme is denim. DJs LisaV, Jrama, Sub Zero and D mofo D are also on the bill, along with some b-boy moves by the Kakimochi Funk Crew. As always, there will be free glitter makeovers, free massages and free California Rockin Sushi till midnight. Doors open at 9 p.m. and it will be party on till 4 a.m., at Wave Waikiki. Cover is $10 before midnight, for 21 and older. 941-0424.

Mei Lwun will also kick off the first installment of Trend, a weekly party Thursdays at Nick's Fishmarket. Enjoy two rooms of grooves with the hip-hop flavor of DJ Epic and MC Trace in one and the soulful tunes of Mei Lwun in the other. The party goes from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., for 21 and older. Cover is $10 for the kick-off party Thursday, and $5 each week afterward. 955-6333.


A night at La Pietra

CHAFETZ
Relax and enjoy some soothing melodies under the glow of the moon at Saturday night's "Music Under the Stars" on the Great Lawn of La Pietra school. Take in the sounds of the Honolulu Symphony with conductor Stuart Chafetz; bring a picnic dinner to dine on. The ticket price of $45 includes coffee, dessert and soft drinks. Proceeds benefit La Pietra. The grounds open at 5:30 p.m., with the performance from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Reservations: 922-2744, 924-7515.


Piano man at Doris Duke theater

Keyboard artist Stephen Wilber brings his ivory-tickling skills to the Doris Duke Theatre at 4 p.m. Sunday. The Honolulu Academy of Arts hosts the Honolulu debut of this international concert pianist who also plays semi-professional football for the Washington, D.C., Chiefs during his downtime. The concert program includes works by Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt and Schumann. Tickets are $15 for all seats. 532-8700.


Two generations together

Grandparents can enjoy some special time with their grandchildren every week at the Children's Discovery Center when the new program My Tutu and Me launches Tuesday. The play morning classes will include a light snack, followed by music and ending with either a craft activity or program. Hours are 9:30-11 a.m. each Tuesday. Summer Blast for all ages

School may have started but that doesn't mean the fun has to stop. Head over to the React End of Summer Blast tonight for an all-ages party from 6 p.m. to midnight with three rooms of activities, dancing and music. Get bumping in Room One with house music by Dynamic Sounds and local DJs David Louis, John Bedel and Joseph Kawika. It's all good in Room Two, with hip-hop by 4 Corners and an open-mike battle hosted by Sir Style. There are also the sounds of 2002 ITF South Pacific Champion DJ Skid. Get down in the Grand Ballroom, Room Three, with R&B and Top 40 music by Universal DJ Souljahz featuring DJs Audissey, Kool It, Rockit, Twiks and Flip, along with Mr. Good Vybe and DJ Free. After a showing of Kutmaster Spaz's new movie "Reaction Time," the Spaz himself, above, will get into a live performance as part of the CD release party.

This tobacco-, drug- and alcohol-free event takes place at Ko'olau Golf Club Ballrooms on Windward O'ahu. Admission is $10 in advance, $12 at the door or free with the purchase of the widely available "React for Him" CD. 306-6663.


Accent on Russian classics

Internationally known piano artist Vladimir Feltsman joins the Honolulu Symphony this weekend for the latest chapter of the Halekulani MasterWorks season. Known for his creative and moving style, the Moscow-born Feltsman has appeared with orchestras and music festivals around the world. Japan's foremost conductor, Tadaaki Otaka, joins in for a night of Russian romance. The concert program includes Liadov's "The Enchanted Lake," Prokofiev's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor" and Rachmaninoff's "Symphony No. 2."

Reggae rhythms at Pipeline

Are you feeling "Irie"? Then head over to Pipeline Café Thursday for a reggae and island concert featuring local acts Ooklah the Moc, Hot Rain, Inoa'ole and DJ Big Barr. The groove is on from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Tickets are $7 in advance for 18 and older. At the door, tickets are $8 for 21 and older and $10 for those 18 to 20. 479-6004.


The sounds of another era

Go back to old Hawai'i and the traditional sounds of the Islands every week as Internet radio personality Aloha Joe hosts the grand opening of Club Waikiki starting at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Miramar Waikiki's Banana Patch Lounge will be the place to relax and be taken back in time with live Hawaiian music, pupu and drinks. The grand opening features Na Hoku Hanohano award winners Raiatea Helm, right, and Nathan Aweau, along with Honolulu band Na Kama. Admission is free for those with an invitation.

Each Saturday thereafter from 8 to 10 p.m., Aloha Joe will host different musical artists against a tropical backdrop. No cover charge.
