Swimming in the details

 •  The Wedding Planner's Web log

My dad asked if he could wear swim trunks to my beach wedding.

I told him only if they match my mom's dress.

At least he's keeping his sense of humor instead of fretting over details.

Imprinted napkins. Centerpieces. The price of tents. You could lose your mind over the small stuff.

And that's without even thinking about what might go wrong.

I just talked to a bride still fighting with a bakery about her melted, lopsided cake.

This column has prompted brides to tell me their horror stories.

Carrie Sekigawa wed in May, but people are still talking about her cake. No one said anything to her about it on her big day.

"They didn't want to let me know what was going on," she said. But days later, they let it slip that the cake looked awful slipping closer to the floor. Her wedding coordinator helped her negotiate with Cake Creations by Lani for a partial refund.

"It didn't ruin my day," Sekigawa said. "It was just a cake."

Honolulu attorney Heather Conahan told me all about a roof.

That would be the roof of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel, where she's getting married next month. The hotel e-mailed her over Labor Day weekend to let her know "emergency" roof repair was taking place. Just guess when.

The attorney in Conahan is trying to troubleshoot. The hotel hasn't budged on her price, but she's trying to get the rest of the deal in writing (like what will be available for construction-free pictures).

"Don't take things for granted," Conahan warns would-be brides.

Then there was Theresa Stephens, who had a dress issue.

A bridal shop let her take the first one back. The second dress started coming apart at the seams, so American Express came to the rescue with a refund.

"I ended up getting a third one," said Stephens, 29, of Kane'ohe, who got married in May but still gives advice in Internet chat rooms to others planning to walk down the aisle.

Interruption here... my mom just called.

She reminded me I need a garter. And to reserve a room for the night of the wedding. And to get transportation lined up for the wedding party. And she wonders if the caterer will provide water (water?) to guests. And did I think about champagne glasses? And will people be able to dance in the grass at our reception? And what about having centerpieces with flowers and beta fish swimming in the vases? And...

Uh-huh.

Nothing to worry about. It's all small stuff.
