FAITH BRIEFS
Central Union minister to retire

Advertiser Staff

The Rev. Dr. Ted Robinson, senior minister of Central Union Church for the past 18 years, announced this week that he will retire next summer.

His final sermon will be April 11, 2004, which falls on Easter Sunday. Because he has leave time built up, the official date won't be until the summer, however.

"I am not retired yet," he wrote in a letter to the congregation on Monday. "There is a stewardship campaign to work on, Christmas to celebrate, Lent to guide us."

Jack Simpson, the church administrator, said yesterday that the next step is for the church council to meet, which it is scheduled to do Tuesday. The council chooses a search committee, which in turn will seek applications and then offers recommendations for a replacement.

Debate on God concludes at UH

After physicist Victor Stenger and theologian William Lane Craig debated the existence of a monotheistic, Judeo-Christian concept of God Wednesday, members of the University of Hawai'i faculty will express their opinions on who won at a panel discussion 7 p.m. this Wednesday in Bilger Auditorium 152 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

The panel includes: Charles Hayes, Ph.D., interim dean of natural sciences; Chung-ying Cheng, Ph.D., department of philosophy; Karen Jolly, Ph.D., chairwoman of the department of history; Ramdas Lamb, Ph.D., department of religion; Alan Stockton, Ph.D., institute for astronomy; and Thomas Jackson, Ph.D., director of philosophy in the schools. Though no formal verdict will be rendered, panelists will argue the relative merits of issues raised in the debate, followed by an audience-participation session.
