UH gets national TV exposure

LOS ANGELES — The University of Hawai'i-Southern California game will be shown nationally on the Fox Sports Net today, a network official said.

Fifteen of the 18 Fox subscriber areas — including Hawai'i — will get the cable broadcast. Cincinnati, Milwaukee and Chicago, because of commitments to baseball broadcasts involving their home teams, will not carry the Warrior-Trojan game.

Because the Fox contract is with the Pac-10 Conference, UH, as a visiting team, does not share in revenue from the appearance.

USC celebrates anniversary

USC is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its last national championship football team in 1978.

That year, Hawai'i nearly spoiled the Trojans' season in a 21-5 loss. The then-Rainbows trailed 7-5 as late as midway through the fourth quarter.

That Trojans featured future NFL stars like tailback Charles White, who won the Heisman Trophy that season, as well as safety Ronnie Lott and offensive tackle Anthony Munoz.

Paul McDonald, USC's starting quarterback that season, did not play in that game because of an ankle injury. His son, Michael, is a walk-on freshman quarterback for this year's Trojans.

Return to Coliseum

The Warriors' walk-through at the Los Angeles Coliseum yesterday afternoon marked the first time a UH team has been in the fabled facility since Nov. 15, 1930. The Trojans prevailed in that meeting, 52-0.

Next meeting in 2005

Today is the fifth meeting between the schools. They last met in 1999 at Aloha Stadium, where the Trojans hammered the Warriors, 62-7, in coach June Jones' debut. The teams meet again Sept. 3, 2005, when the Trojans visit Hawai'i for the Warriors' season opener.

Hawai'i connections

Linebacker Marco Chavez, a transfer from UH who never played for the Warriors, is redshirting this year at USC. ... USC said it has approximately 2,000 alumni living in Hawai'i and an active Trojan Club of about 500.
