Kamehameha rallies past Saint Louis, 16-13

Saint Louis' Kealii Perbera tumbled over Kamehameha's Travis Correa last night at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors defeated the Crusaders, 16-13.

Game 1 of Darnell Arceneaux's coaching career at Saint Louis School showed two things above all else: One, the Crusaders are every bit a threat to win an Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship as they were the past 17 straight title seasons; and two, Kamehameha is just as much a threat to finally break that string.

The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide poll, rallied from a 13-0 deficit last night and then held off No. 3 Saint Louis, 16-13, in a thrilling ILH opener before 9,193 fans at Aloha Stadium.

Kamehameha (3-0 overall) scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 4-yard play action pass from quarterback Pono Kam to tight end Kawika Vincent with 10:42 remaining in the game, then later got a gift first down when Saint Louis was flagged for a personal foul after stopping the Warriors on third-and-7 on their own 44 with 1:32 left. The Crusaders were out of timeouts, and Kamehameha ran out the clock.

"We were fortunate, we got lucky; this thing coulda gone any which way you could imagine," Warriors coach Kanani Souza said.

Arceneaux, 25, was in his first league game as a head coach. The Saints took a 7-0 lead barely two minutes into the game on a 29-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Keali'i Perbera to Maka'ala Kuewa. Leichman Fiaseu's 1-yard TD plunge in the second quarter made it 13-0.

The Warriors closed to 13-7 shortly before halftime on a 6-yard TD run by Kam, and then made it 13-9 after linebacker Travis Correa tripped up Perbera for a safety with 2:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Ikaika Hardie returned the ensuing kickoff 34 yards to the 50, and Vincent gave Kamehameha its only lead nine plays later.
