Aid available for musicians at Hilo conference

Musicians interested in traditional Hawaiian music, particularly haku mele, may now be eligible for a scholarship to the He Hali'a Aloha 'O Lili'uokalani Music Conference, "Haku Mele 2003," on Sept. 27 at the Hawaii Naniloa Resort in Hilo, Hawai'i.
The focus of the conference will be "How to Compose a Song," haku mele. Amy Ku'uleialoha Stillman is the special guest; she is an associate professor of music and American culture, and director of Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies at the University of Michigan.
Guest speakers include other prominent educators, composers, kumu hula and archivists specializing in Hawaiian music, language and culture.
To apply, send a letter of interest and financial need to the Hawai'i Island Economic Development Board, PMB 281, 200 Kanoelehua Ave., Hilo, HI 96720. Scholarship funds will cover $85 of the conference's $125 attendance fee. The deadline to apply is Friday. Call (808) 966-5416 for more information.
