NORTH SHORE

Man dies in Mokule'ia crash

A 21-year-old man died early yesterday morning when his car crashed into a concrete embankment on Farrington Highway in Mokule'ia, police said.

The man, driving alone in a red 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, was headed west at 12:10 a.m. when he missed a turn near Ho'omana Place and hit the embankment, investigators said. The Jetta rolled over twice, pinning the driver. Police said speed and alcohol appear to be factors.

Fire destroys Wai'anae home

A fire sparked by an electrical problem in a garage washroom destroyed one house and damaged an adjoining one early yesterday morning in Wai'anae. Two friends woke up the families, and the six adults and four children got out safely, said HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada.

The fire was reported at 2:13 a.m. at 84-632 Widemann St., where a carport and garage sit between a main house and an addition. Fire crews arrived at 2:17 a.m. and had the fire under control 10 minutes later. The fire caused $200,000 in damage to the buildings and $50,000 to the contents.


Brushfire burns 25 acres

Firefighters battled a brushfire at the end of Wai'anae Valley Road yesterday that burned 25 acres.

HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada said seven fire companies worked to bring the fire, which started about 2:45 p.m., under control.

By nightfall, firefighters had extinguished a 50-yard perimeter around the blaze. They will return this morning to check on the fire and put out hot spots, he said.

There were no injuries, and no structures were damaged.


EAST HONOLULU

Power cut to Hawai'i Kai

A cable malfunction knocked out traffic lights in Hawai'i Kai and cut off power to 2,200 East Honolulu residents yesterday afternoon. The first failure was reported at 12:46 p.m. and affected 1,200 customers, HECO spokesman Jose Dizon said. It was followed by another failure at 1:09 p.m. that affected 1,000 customers. Power was restored at 2:40 p.m.


NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Robbers pose as officers

KAILUA, KONA, Hawai'i — Two armed robbers posed as police officers when they forced their way into a South Kona home. Police said the men dressed like officers, showed badges and identified themselves as officers.

The men had pistols and a shotgun when they forced their way into a Honaunau home Wednesday, overpowered a 49-year-old occupant and tied him up with duct tape, police said. The two then took an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables.
