Woman’s death investigatedPolice are investigating the death of a 52-year-old woman who was pulled from Nu'uanu Stream near 175 N. Hotel Street on Sept. 6.
The woman was only partially clothed when firefighters brought her out of the stream. She was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center, where she died Sept. 10.
Homicide Lt. Bill Kato said police were not informed about the incident until after the woman died. Investigators are awaiting results of an autopsy to determine wheth-er foul play is involved.
Furlough center inmate missing
A 34-year-old man who did not return Sunday night to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center has been classified as a prison escapee.
Edward L. Gomes left for work at 6:35 a.m. Sunday and did not return as scheduled at 9 p.m. Gomes is still at large.
Man charged in flight fracas
A man was charged yesterday with assaulting a flight attendant on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu on Saturday.
David D. Salgado was charged with interfering with a flight crew.
Salgado was aboard Hawaiian Flight 33 when he and a group of friends became vulgar, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court by FBI Special Agent Chong Cho.
A flight attendant decided to stop serving the group liquor, and a few minutes later Salgado demanded more beer.
Salgado allegedly told another member of the flight crew that, "You’re going down." Salgado then shoved a flight attendant, Cho said.
Salgado was arrested by state sheriffs when the plane arrived in Honolulu.
Maui traffic death toll rises
A 58-year-old Kihei man killed last night in a traffic collision in Kahului is Maui’s 11th traffic fatality of the year.
Police said the victim’s 1988 Toyota sedan was hit broadside by a 1993 Dodge pickup truck while turning left at the intersection of Ka'ahumanu and Pu'unene avenues. The collision was reported to police at 10:34 p.m.
The man was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center. A 58-year-old man, a front-seat passenger in the Toyota, was taken to Maui Memorial in serious condition.
The pickup truck driver, a 39-year-old Makawao man, refused treatment at Maui Memorial and was released.
Crash victim was sailor
A Sunday traffic accident victim has been identified as a Pearl Harbor sailor.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Eric R. Singer, 21, of Orlando, Fla., died in the one-car crash about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, said Jason Holm, a spokesman for the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, where the sailor was assigned.
The accident occurred on Farrington Highway near Dillingham Airfield in Waialua.
