Ship picks up sailor after his boat sinks

A sailboat skipper was rescued yesterday after his boat sank about 575 miles northeast of Hilo.

The Coast Guard in Honolulu said it picked up an emergency signal Monday afternoon from the 35-foot sailboat Ra, home-ported in Coupeville, Wash. The Ra was using three pumps to try to remove water from the boat.

A Coast Guard C-130 located the boat and dropped a fourth pump, but the Ra sank. The only person aboard, Marcus Dubrow, took to a life raft Monday evening and was picked up by the Japanese ship Katsuragi about 7 1/2 hours later. The ship was scheduled to drop off Dubrow in Honolulu today.
