Former crew members of the USS Missouri returned to the battleship on Sept. 2 for ceremonies commemorating the 58th anniversary of the end of World War II. The event began at 8:45 a.m., the same hour in 1945 that Japanese officials signed surrender documents aboard the "Mighty Mo," now a memorial at Pearl Harbor.

As blessings were invoked for the site of the Fire Department headquarters on Queen and South streets, to be completed next year, Honolulu Fire Chief Attilio Leonardi, center, flanked by Mayor Jeremy Harris, left, and Fire Commissioner Anson "Slim" Ilae, talked about the site's reputation for "spiritual energy." The old station nearby was reputed to be haunted.
